ATProM would like to welcome Dr Ryno Laubscher as the new Academic Lead in the EPPEI Specialisation in Energy Efficiency.
The EPPEI Specialisation in Energy Efficiency (EE) was formally established as a Research Unit by the UCT Senate in December 2017 after a rigorous accreditation process. The importance of such accreditation is that it monitors the sustainability of research groups and promotes the visibility to potential funders outside the university.
Students and staff from the ATProM Research Unit participated in the FNB12One run on Sunday 20 May. This was an opportunity for the students who do weekly trail runs in Newlands forest to race longer distances.

A paper on condition monitoring of thermofluid processes from the ATProM Research Unit was presented at the 31st International Congress and Exhibition on Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic Engineering Management (COMADEM). This research provided the condition monitoring community with relevant contributions addressing key challenges in bridging the gap between model-based and data-driven monitoring methods.
The paper titled "A methodology for quantifying anomalies which lead to capacity limitations on induced draught fans" recently presented at the PoweGen Africa 2018 conference was awarded first runner up in the Thermal Generation conference track.
Five students represented ATProM at the years EPPEI student workshop and 3 were awarded best presenter for their given session.
A recent publication by doctoral student Patrick Akpan and his supervisor Associate Professor Wim Fuls presents a generic approach to determining the final feed water temperature and extraction points in coal fired power plants.
A paper, titled “Dynamic modelling of the HPS2 CSP molten salt parabolic trough test facility” was presented at the conference.
Mr Excellent Zibhekele Gwebu presented some of the work in his PhD at the 16th International Heat Transfer Conference in Beijing, China on the 10-15 August 2018.
